QUALIFICATIONS

Hold a valid license to practice as a registered nurse, issued under KRS 314.041 by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

Hold a Valid Kentucky driver's license.

BSN preferred. Current BLS certification; Instructor certification preferred.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Perform specialized school-based nursing services to patients of all ages in accordance with the scope of practice for a Registered Nurse.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain current standards of nursing and adhere to the appropriate code of ethics. 

Provide care to patients presenting with acute illness or injury in accordance with nursing scope of practice and/or standing orders. Wear appropriate PPE at all times. Ensure accurate documentation of care provided. 

Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all patients, including but not limited to physical examinations and immunizations as required by law. Follow procedures when records are invalid or deficient.  Utilize KYIR.  Generate regular compliance reports. 

Serve as a liaison and advocate for student health in communication between school personnel, family, health care professionals, and the community.

In accordance with scope of practice and state laws, train and delegate to unlicensed school personnel the administration of medication and/or delivery of health services to students, as ordered by a licensed healthcare provider.  

Coordinate care of chronic conditions and formulate student emergency action plans related to diabetes, seizures, asthma, allergies, etc. Administration of daily and emergency medications and treatments as ordered by a licensed healthcare provider. 

Ensure appropriate exclusion for infectious illnesses and reporting of communicable diseases as required by law.

Conduct a variety of health screenings, including but not limited to vision, hearing, dental and substance use. Ensure adequate training of staff and volunteers to conduct screenings, and effective follow-up plans for findings.

Refer patients to appropriate personnel, health care providers, resources, or clinics and follow-up as necessary.

Promote and participate in health awareness activities.

Coordinate and conduct staff health training, including, but not limited to, CPR, First Aid, medication administration, health aide delegation, bloodborne pathogens, chronic disease management, and AED. 

Provides oversight to students working in the school health clinic.

Maintain adequate stock of first aid supplies; ensure medical equipment is in proper working order; Conduct monthly checks as assigned

Assist in the preparation of health reports as assigned. 

Assist district APRN staff as needed.

Participate in and provide oversight of individual school Medicaid billing for health services. 

Attend staff meetings, continuing education activities, and other training(s) as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of policies, statutes, and regulations related to state nursing practice and school health programs.

Knowledge of vision, hearing, dental, substance abuse, and other screening techniques.

Oral and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills: patience, positivity, courtesy, and care.

Knowledge of communicable diseases.

Compile data and prepare and verify reports.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Wide range of physical movement including bending, squatting, reaching, and with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights.

Use of speech, vision, hearing.

Use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.

Indoor and outdoor activity.
